A tale of the ASR 9000, 6.4Tbps and the year 2010

There has been a heated debate as a result of this Network World story which asks how Cisco claims the ASR 9000 can achieve 6.4Tbps of bandwidth with 400Gbps per slot. The folks at Seeking Alpha say they've figured it out and if they are right, that speed likely won't be available in the ASR 9000 until 2010. They write: "We think we know what the answer might be and it is EZchip Semiconductor. ... we have come to learn through our independent research efforts that EZchip’s NP-3c processor is being used in the initial line cards for the ASR 9000 and EZchip’s 100 gig NP-4 processors are likely to be included in future line cards for this product." Seeking Alpha estimates that those future NP-4 line cards should become available in 2010.

All this month Cisco has been touting the upcoming launch of its new ASR 9000 Carrier Ethernet router. However suprisingly, for calendar year 3Q08, Cisco suffered an unusual loss of market share in service provider routers. Is MTBF data useless? by Jimmy Ray Purser

I was at a customer site the other day and we were going back and forth on MTBF numbers like George Costanza trying to split a check for lunch. Reading MTBF numbers is kinda like believing you can actually catch fish with the Ronco pocket fisherman. Wow!! According to my Mean Time Between Failure data, my network gear will last for 30 years!! Sorta like a furniture store going out of business...for five years. Normally, most folks look at MTBF data like this; "Hmmm, a year contains 8,766 hours....

Top 7 James Bond 007 Techno Gadgets, some are real today by Jamey Heary

The new James Bond movie releases next week and I can’t wait. The best part of watching a 007 flick is seeing all the new gadgets that Q has cooked up for Bond to use. Over the years their have been some really great ones going all the way back to the Sean Connery era in the 1960’s. Even though the new bond movies don’t include the same amount of cool 007 gadgetry, I thought it would be fun to do a blog on 7 of my personal favorites from the Bond series anyway. When these gadgets were... 5

Ok, the Economy is Bad, Some Cost Savings Tips by Michael Morris

I wrote a blog back in August about how the economy wasn't that bad and good jobs were available. Well, I'm going to have to revise that comment....the economy is bad and will probably get worse. As everyone knows, in September and October we saw the banking and credit crisis, a 3,000 point drop in the Dow, and the beginning of layoffs, even in IT. Companies have frozen budgets, stopped hiring, and initiated massive cost savings projects. So, here are some cost savings tips and projects...
